Capturing the Total Impact of a Subject

I have been reviewing and analyzing some of my ideas for effective composition. I remembered an acronym that was shared with me many years ago by my mentor Scott Bourne. The acronym is EDFAT which stands for entire, detail, focal length, angle  and time. EDFAT represents what should be covered when photographing an event or a subject.

1.  Capture the entire scene to give context

2.  Capture details that are important to help tell the story

3.  Change the focal length to add interest

4.  Vary the angle to show different perspectives

5.  Shoot at a different time to capture a different look

The images in this post represent each of the components of the acronym except for time.

I found this old barn in the Palouse and proceeded to capture images that would show the areas of interest in the scene.

Corvair Discovery

A couple weeks ago as I was driving the countryside in the Palouse looking for barns, when I noticed the barn that you see in the image at the top of this post. When I stopped to check it out, I made a discovery of several old cars and trucks on the deserted property.

I love cars from the 50’s and 60’s and have owned a Corvair and a couple of Mustangs from the 60’s. As I walked around I saw two Corvairs sitting side by side in the weeds. They were pretty much in disrepair and in various stages of rust. Still they were of interest to me as I thoroughly looked them over and took pictures. This was a fun experience for me and I hope you enjoy the images.

One thing I have found in the Palouse region as in many other farming areas is that the farmers rarely get rid of an old truck or piece of farm machinery. There is a great opportunity to see and photograph these old vehicles if you have the desire.

I mentioned in my last post about having a mentor. Scott Bourne who is my mentor, just wrote an excellent article that I feel is a must read. Thinking creatively as you photograph is so essential. His article “Get Creative – Tell Stories With Your Camera” has some very important food for thought.

The picture at the top of this post reminds of the story that was told in the movie “Cars” by Disney. I would like to know the story this old car in the image would tell.

I hope you enjoy this information as much as I did as I read it. Hopefully it will prove to be of value to you as you progress in achieving your goals in photography.
