Wheat Harvest in the Palouse

A busy time of the year is upon us in the Palouse. According to my local sources, wheat harvest has begun in some areas. When the wheat is ready, work is happening seven days a week from dawn to dark. For me, it is an exciting time with the dust, large combines, golden wheat and the exotic patterns that are created as everyone rushes to gather in the bountiful harvest.

It is interesting to photograph all aspects of the harvest. Visiting small one man operations as well as large scale farming lets you see the full spectrum of this seasonal event. Many opportunities to see the combines at work can be seen as you drive along the highway. It is also a thrill to travel some of the gravel and dirt roads in the region to see the harvest in the back country.

I usually ask around who is cutting and it seems as though most people are very much aware as to where the harvest is taking place. Another way that I find a field that is being cut is to follow the large trucks that are in the process of hauling the grain to the various elevators in the area.

I hope you have the time to get involved in this fascinating world of big time productive farming in the Palouse. I know you will come away with wonderful memories and a great collection of images from your experience.

Steptoe Butte – a “mountaintop” experience

My favorite place to spend time while visiting in the Palouse is Steptoe Butte. This thimble-shaped quartzite butte with an elevation of 3,612 feet provides a viewpoint to observe the rolling landscape in any direction. I truly enjoy how a different view is provided each time based on the available light and time of year.

I visit the butte each time I am near Colfax because I am always rewarded with the exhilarating feeling of driving the narrow road with its switchbacks to the top. The feeling is that you are on top of the world.

Allow plenty of time to enjoy the changing light either in the early morning or  evening.  This will provide you the opportunity to be a part of the entire experience. Capturing great images is always a bonus but this is still a great adventure even if the light is not perfect.

Take the time to visit this butte and enjoy an incredible “mountaintop” experience.

Photomatix Pro – comparing tone mapping and blending images

I have been using Photomatix Pro for several months to process HDR images. I have been very happy with the results for HDR but there is another option in the program that I had not tried until recently. Rather than generating an HDR and tone mapping, the other option is to create an image through exposure blending.

I tried this process and below is a comparison between the final images using HDR in the first image and exposure blending in the second.

In this example my preference is for the image that was processed with tone mapping as it tends to show more detail in the shadows. Some of you may prefer the exposure blending so It is nice that this program does allow for  options for combining and processing images with high contrast elements.

I was interested in an article posted by Scott Bourne at photofocus.com discussing the convergence of stills and video and I thought I would share it with my readers as some food for thought. This article was written by Mitch Aunger the publisher at planet5D.com .

I own as one of my cameras the Canon 5D Mark II and have been experimenting a bit with the video. After reading this article I may need to get a bit more serious in learning to use it in my work. Your comments and responses are of interest to me.

Light Show at Grand Coulee Dam

I decided to try something different for observing a fireworks show this year. We traveled to eastern Washington and attended the show at Grand Coulee Dam. There were many light sources at the dam including an almost full moon, the normal lights at the dam, a laser light show and the fireworks that were special to celebrate the 4th of July.

The image at the top of this post is from the laser show that was accompanied by music and had a theme about water and irrigation in the region. The remainder of the images just show various light sources at the dam and of course most of the emphasis is on the fireworks.

t was a fun trip and in addition to the light show, I found several new vistas so once again the area in the Palouse and eastern Washington offered a great opportunity for capturing images.

Since the 4th of July is tomorrow, I am planning on shooting some fireworks images. I really enjoy photographing fireworks but there are several things to keep in mind to get the best results. In the following article by Nicole Young a few useful tips are emphasized to help you create your best images. The article can be found at photofocus.com which is hosted by Scott Bourne.

I am heading to the Grand Coulee Dam in eastern Washington for their fireworks show tomorrow. I have heard it is a great display and will offer a different opportunity for me. I usually attend the fireworks display at Lake Union in Seattle but decided to try a new venue.

I hope you enjoy your holiday weekend and have fun shooting and experimenting using these tips.

Day trip to the Dahmen barn is enjoyable

From time to time I like to just share another place that I enjoy shooting in the Palouse. One of my favorite areas is in the vicinity of Union Town. There are many barns and fields in this area that add to the photo opportunities. Union Town is located about halfway between Pullman and Lewiston.

One of the main attractions in Union Town is the Dahmen barn which has a famous wheel fence. Currently there are over 1000 wheels in the fence. I like to photograph in the early morning for the best light but any time of day provides an interesting attraction allowing for creativity in combining the fence with the barn.

There is an art gallery in the barn which makes for an enjoyable way to see art as well as explore the barn. This is definitely a great area to visit and should be on your short list as you explore the Palouse.

If you would like more information about the barn and the activities that take place there follow this link Dahmen Barn.
