While visiting and shooting in the Palouse, you will have many opportunities for photographing wildlife. While I was visiting Palouse Falls State Park yesterday, I was treated to views of several species of birds and animals. Most were visible from my car window as I was traveling to the falls.

In the state park there are several marmots that reside year round on the cliffs that overlook the canyon. The one in the photo above was very inquisitive and seemed to enjoy the sunshine on a cold winter day.
As I left the park I spotted this red-tailed hawk sitting on a fence post and was able to photograph it from my car window. Throughout the day as I headed to Colfax, I saw mule deer, white-tailed deer and a coyote from the highway.

As you can see, a trip to the Palouse not only provides scenic landscapes but the wildlife is plentiful and accessible for capturing images.

Dark Sky Looms over Barn by Gary Hamburgh - All Rights Reserved
Shooting barns in the Palouse can be rewarding at any time of year. In the winter the element of snow really adds to the scene especially when there is a dark sky for contrast. The key for your image to be effective is to find a barn that is isolated so a winter vastness is created.
The barn pictured above is located in the rolling hills at the base of the Blue Mountains in eastern Washington. The image contains the elements of a dark threatening sky, wide open space in snow fields and the barn which is prominent in the foreground. By finding these conditions and including them in your photo, an image is created that stands out in a landscape of winter whiteness.
Remember a visit to the Palouse in winter can provide that opportunity for you.

Chocolate and Caramel Mounds by Gary Hamburgh - All Rights Reserved
Photographing the Palouse can be very rewarding if you go back to capture the same image at a different time. That familiar scene has a completely different look due to a change in colors and textures. These changes may be a seasonal change or because of cultivating and harvesting the land. As you revisit, it exciting to see the the subtle as well as the bold transformations that have taken place.
The two photos above were taken from the same location on Steptoe Butte during the same calendar year. The first photo “View from Steptoe Butte” was taken in May and the second “Chocolate and Caramel Mounds” was taken in July. They both show common elements as well as major differences. This seasonal change is very dramatic and can provide you with a new vision as you explore the Palouse .
Remember when shooting the Palouse, retrace your steps and be rewarded a second time.

Wheels in the Wheat by Gary Hamburgh - All Rights Reserved
I am starting this blog because of my attachment to the Palouse region of Eastern Washington. I lived in Walla Walla for 34 years and fell in love with the many colors, shapes and patterns of the region. I started photographing the Palouse five years ago and through this blog I hope to share my knowledge and experience of this region. I will share images of the country, farmland, barns and culture as we undertake our journey together.
In addition, I hope to contribute general knowledge about photography, equipment, software and techniques that I utilize to capture my Palouse images. By reading this blog, I hope you can benefit and learn to enjoy this beautiful region as much as I do.
